Suzuki Does That Thing We Said it Shouldn’t Do

Japanese manufacturer offers 2-percent financing and £750 worth of accessories on certain models

As if to prove we’re not just making this stuff up, Suzuki on Tuesday announced a host of incentives to UK buyers, including low-rate finance and free accessories.

Readers with a memory that can stretch back five days will remember this practice was called into question in an article suggesting ways for the Japanese manufacturer to return to its glory days. Whereas Suzuki motorcycles were once coveted by British riders, the company has struggled in recent years to even find a place in the top ten of sales charts (taking a look at statistics from the UK Motorcycle Industry Association).

In the first two months of 2018, for example (stats are not yet available for March), Suzuki was beaten in sales not only by the other members of Japan’s Big Four, as well as BMW, KTM, and Triumph – but also Harley-Davidson. Stop and think about that for a second. In a country that traditionally dislikes cruisers, Harley-Davidson is selling 30 percent more bikes than Suzuki. Despite the fact Suzuki offers models in more segments than Harley and most of its bikes cost less than those offered by Harley. That is a sad state of affairs.

In last week’s “Let’s Tell Suzuki What to Do” article we suggested that its predictable response to this situation may be hurting Suzuki more than helping. The company has become too well known for offering deal sweeteners, to the extent most consumers now won’t touch its bikes without them. We suggested the manufacturer hit the brakes on this behavior, but it seems old habits die hard.

On Tuesday it announced financing as low as 2 percent across its model range, including on the newly released SV650X.

“Customers can choose from 2 percent APR over two years, 3 percent over three years, or 4 percent over four years, and also choose between a PCP deal or a hire purchase agreement,” explained a media release.

Meanwhile, in addition to low finance, the company is also offering £750 of free accessories on its V-Strom 650 and V-Strom 1000 models. With the right deposit, the latter can be had for as little as £99 a month.

In fairness, a person who takes up such an offer can be relatively secure in the knowledge that he or she isn’t getting ripped off. As a former V-Strom 1000 owner I can attest to the quality and durability of Suzuki bikes. They may be severely lacking in wow factor and resale value, but they’ll at least keep running for a really long time.
