Indian Motorcycle has announced that the bike we’ve been drooling over for the past several months – the FTR 1200 – will be made into a production model. Details on the exact when and what of the bike remain vague, but this confirmation of a forthcoming naked motorcycle will no doubt delight fans of the brand and American motorcycles.
Indian made the announcement late Saturday at the Wheels and Waves festival in France. It’s an appropriate setting because the Scout, from which the FTR1200 will derive its powerplant, has performed surprisingly well in the European market.
Or, well, we assume it will be powered by the same liquid-cooled V-twin that drives the Scout and Scout Bobber. In fact, Indian hasn’t even confirmed that much. All we know so far is that “it will have a flat tracker style, a trellis frame, and be powered by a V-twin engine,’ according to a media release from Indian.
The company also doesn’t give any specific dates for release beyond a promise of 2019.
Excitingly, folks like myself who have been buzzing about the bike ever since it was revealed as a custom creation at EICMA 2017 have a chance to win one of the first bikes to come off the assembly line.
I almost don’t want to tell you about the website www.win-ftr1200.com because it inherently damages my chances of winning the bike when more people know about it. But I suppose a good public response will let Indian know that it’s heading down the right path in offering a naked/standard bike.
“When we unveiled the FTR1200 Custom at EICMA, we said we’d listen to feedback from riders around the world,” said Steve Menneto, president of Indian Motorcycle. “Riders definitely have spoken and the response has been overwhelming. We’re proud and excited to announce that we will be putting the FTR 1200 into production.”
Meanwhile, I am deeply jealous to learn that some people have already had a peak of what the production bike will look like. A small group of industry VIPs viewed an early production version of the FTR 1200 behind closed doors at Wheels and Waves, according to Indian. What they saw, apparently takes “inspiration, design and performance cues” from both the FTR750 flat track race bike and the FTR1200 Custom designed to honor it.
However, Indian also says that the FTR 1200 “will maintain a look and style all of its own,” which is probably another way of saying it won’t have crazy expensive bits and will have the necessary accoutrements for a street-legal bike.
Indian Motorcycle Senior Designer Rich Christoph was instrumental in the design of the FTR 1200, FTR1200 Custom, and FTR750.
“We wanted to make sure that the FTR 1200 wasn’t merely a regurgitation of the FTR1200 Custom, but something uniquely ‘street,’ albeit flat-track inspired,” he said. “We’re thrilled about the character this bike possesses and its ability to take American V-twin motorcycles into new territory.”
I’m thrilled as well. I am so stupid excited for this bike. Though, I’m intrigued to know when it will be fully revealed to the public. I thought I knew when and where that would happen, but the timing now seems off. Could we get a glimpse of the new FTR 1200 as early as next month (ie, in time for Sturgis), or will Indian keep us guessing all the way through the summer before displaying the bike at one of the big European shows – Intermot or EICMA?
“From the very beginning, our intention was to develop Indian Motorcycle into a global brand,” said Michael Dougherty, president of Indian Motorcycle International. “Armed with a strong foundation, it’s now time to break new ground for an American motorcycle manufacturer and the FTR 1200 is where that begins.”
