Let’s Drool at These Pictures of the KTM 790 Adventure R

Final production model to revealed at this year's EICMA

KTM has shared a number of images of its forthcoming 790 Adventure R being ridden at this year’s European Adventure Rally. The Austrian company chose to have the bike make its first official appearance there – rather than, say, a trade show or fancy press launch – because, you know, KTM.

The 790 Adventure R is powered by the same parallel twin that drives the wacky 790 Duke that was first revealed as a prototype at EICMA 2016. The pictures here are of a prototype, according to KTM, and the final production-ready machine will appear at EICMA 2018.

The European Adventure Rally is an annual event for KTM’s more intense owners, providing several days of guided riding and tuition on some challenging courses. Riders there were given an “exclusive opportunity to see an early preproduction version of the KTM 790 Adventure R ridden by Chris Birch – an eight-time New Zealand Enduro champ and triple Roof of Africa winner,” according to KTM.

KTM is clearly angling to present this bike as a truly offroad-worthy machine, setting it apart from a number of existing middleweight adventure bikes.

“The lightweight KTM 790 Adventure R will have the performance and poise for enduro riders who demand to go further, or adventurers who desire to tackle the paths least explored,” states a KTM media release. “This is a motorcycle to back up the ambitious.”

KTM has also released a few facts about the bike. As stated above, it will have the same LC8c 799cc parallel twin engine as the 790 Duke – a bike that claims 110 horsepower – but will be tuned to deliver a “wider spread of torque” than its nutso naked sibling. The company is also promising a fully adjustable suspension, adjustable ergonomics, a low center of gravity, and a low seat height – all aimed at making the bike as user-friendly as possible.

KTM also says the bike will be capable of racking up 400 km (just shy of 250 miles) on a single tank of fuel.

Meanwhile, spy shots circulating on the interwebs this week show the company is working on a 390 Adventure bike. We’ll probably have to wait for EICMA to hear more on that one.
